Popular car is a category of automobiles that have as public target consumers of the working classes, and that is distinguished mainly in the Brazilian context. The notion stems from the concept of Fordism, with the idea of "car for large crowds," in which the factory worker himself was a potential customer. Praised, criticized, debated and controversial, the popular car helped automobile companies overcome internal and external crises and was used by governments as a driving force of the economy. It faced the difficulties of the Brazilian economy, as well as suffered or benefited from increases and decreases in the Tax on Industrialized Products (IPI). In the 1990s, the 1000cc engine was the flagship of the big automakers, and Brazil became a world platform for developing compact cars (although the 1000 engine continues to be used exclusively in the domestic market).
